Who We Are

New Town Barombi is a vibrant and culturally diverse village located in Meme Division, Mbonge Subdivision, in the South West Region of Cameroon. With a recorded population of 1,876 inhabitants (2005 census), our community stands as a melting pot of ethnic groups such as Oroko, Moghamo, Wum, Bakossi, Kom, Mbengwi, Fang, and others — all living together as one people.

Though built on land originally inhabited by the Bakundu indigenous group, New Town Barombi has grown into a welcoming village that embraces unity, cooperation, and progress through diversity. Our strength lies in our people — hardworking, loving, caring, supportive, and resilient.

Our Story

Oral history suggests that the first settlers of New Town Barombi migrated from Kotto Barombi, beginning with only two houses at the village’s entrance. Over time, the community expanded, attracting families from various regions of Cameroon and evolving into the diverse settlement it is today.

Despite its growth and contribution to the region, New Town Barombi faces a unique challenge:
It exists on the physical map, but is absent from the civil status and digital registry systems of Cameroon. This lack of official recognition has contributed significantly to the village’s neglect in terms of public infrastructure, government services, and development opportunities.

Our Identity

New Town Barombi is more than a village — it is a community built on:

  • Ethnic diversity

  • Shared culture

  • Agricultural strength

  • Collective resilience

  • A rich vision for growth

Our people are predominantly farmers, cultivating cocoa, plantains, cassava, yams, and other crops thanks to our fertile tropical soil. Alongside farming, many residents are traders, tailors, teachers, carpenters, and skilled artisans.

The Challenges We Face

New Town Barombi continues to experience long-standing developmental challenges, including:

  • Lack of official recognition as a locality in national records

  • Absence of essential infrastructure:

    • No health center

    • No secondary or high school

    • No pipe-borne water

  • A deplorable primary school building, existing long before the Anglophone Crisis

  • Neglect caused by limited political representation

  • Low visibility on national and digital platforms

These challenges have slowed progress — but they have not stopped the determination of the people.

Our Purpose

The New Town Barombi community is now taking intentional steps to:
