This absence affects everything from national identification procedures to school examination registrations.

Consequences of This Administrative Neglect
As a result of not being officially recognized:

The village lacks a health center

There is no secondary or high school

There is no pipe-borne water

Only one government building exists — the Government Primary School, which is in a deplorable condition and has remained unattended to even before the Anglophone Crisis.

The village survives mainly through self-help efforts and community initiatives, as government intervention is minimal.

WHY NEW TOWN BAROMBI IS NEGLECTED :

Possible Reasons New Town Barombi Is Neglected and Not Considered a Locality
Understanding the roots of New Town Barombi’s longstanding neglect requires a deeper look at the social, political, administrative, and historical dynamics that shape community recognition in Cameroon. Although the village has a vibrant population and a rich cultural diversity, several factors have contributed to its exclusion from development planning and civil status systems.

1. Absence of Effective Elites in Government and Decision-Making Positions
One of the most significant reasons for the village’s marginalization is the lack of strong political representation. While New Town Barombi has produced capable and intelligent elites, very few have held positions within the political system or governmental structures where decisions are made.

Unlike neighboring villages such as Bai Panya and Kotto Barombi, which benefit from active councilors and influential representatives in Mbonge Subdivision, New Town Barombi often has no one advocating for its needs. This lack of representation directly affects development allocation. If there is no voice in the council table, there is no one to demand:

schools

health centers

roads

water systems

communication infrastructure

A clear example is the case where MTN initially planned to install an antenna on New Town’s reserve hill, but due to lack of advocacy, the project was diverted to Bai Panya instead. The same pattern occurred with other social amenities meant for the village.

Historically, the only councilor from New Town Barombi was Mr. Jacob Tata, who succeeded in securing two additional structures and toilets for the Government Primary School. Since his departure, no other representative has taken up this role, leaving a developmental vacuum.

2. Ethnic Plurality and Lack of a Dominant Indigenous Group
New Town Barombi is a unique community made up of various ethnic groups—Orokos, Moghamo, Wum, Bakossi, Kom, Mbengwi, Fang, and others. Many residents are migrants or descendants of settlers and not indigenous to the land. While this cultural diversity is a strength, it also presents a challenge in political terms.

Communities with a unified indigenous identity often have:

stronger solidarity

a clear spokesperson or traditional leader

stronger political backing

higher cultural influence

Kotto Barombi, for instance, although containing migrants like New Town, still has a strong presence of the island people—the bonafide historical inhabitants of the area. This gives them more recognition and leverage before the state and local council.

In contrast, New Town Barombi’s population of “strangers” with diverse origins lacks a traditional or political “godfather,” making it easier for the village to be overlooked.

3. Inadequate Geographical Features to Attract Government Attention
Geography often plays a subtle but powerful role in determining development priority.

Villages with special geographical features, such as:

Kotto Barombi’s natural lake

Bai Panya’s MTN antenna site

automatically gain more attention from government agencies, tourists, NGOs, and local authorities. These features make them desirable locations for infrastructure and investment.

New Town Barombi, lacking such distinctive geographical attractions, does not naturally draw attention. Before the crisis, it was rumored that the government considered creating another subdivision from Mbonge, and Kotto Barombi was a top choice because of its unique geographic attributes. New Town Barombi, without such features, remained low on the priority list.

4. Low Political Participation and Voter Registration
Political participation is a major factor in how governments allocate development. Before the Anglophone crisis, citizens of New Town Barombi were often inactive in elections, showing low interest in municipal, parliamentary, and presidential voting.

Because the number of registered voters from New Town was small, electoral bodies merged them with Kotto Barombi. As a result:

the village gained no political identity

it was never considered a voting locality

it received no “thank you” projects that communities often get after elections

In Cameroon, the more voters a community has, the more seriously it is taken. Since New Town Barombi did not present strong voting power, it was not seen as a locality worth investing in.

5. Limited Visibility and Public Recognition
Visibility is a key driver of development. A village that is talked about, documented, and known stands a better chance of attracting:

investors

NGOs

government projects

well-wishers

philanthropic support

Unfortunately, New Town Barombi has suffered from very low visibility. It has no official online presence, no digital footprint, and limited representation in public media. Without visibility, even communities without elites can still attract support—but New Town Barombi has remained silent, unseen, and unrepresented.

6. Weak Patriotism and Limited Local Investment
Although many sons and daughters of the village love New Town Barombi, only a few show active patriotism through investment or community-driven projects. Because most residents consider themselves “strangers” or settlers, they prefer to build permanent homes in the villages of their ancestors rather than invest in New Town.

This mindset:

weakens community development

reduces local economic growth

discourages government interest

prevents the formation of a unified community agenda

A community that does not invest in itself struggles to attract external investment.

The Need for Solutions
Having identified these long-standing issues, this article will now transition into proposing practical, achievable recommendations that the community can adopt. One of the first and most important steps is:

Setting Up a Central Committee
A central committee would serve as the governing body responsible for:

strategic planning

addressing community problems

ensuring representation

coordinating development efforts

speaking on behalf of the village

With the right leadership, this committee can become the backbone of New Town Barombi’s transformation.

Recommendations for the Development of New Town Barombi

To address the longstanding challenges facing New Town Barombi and reposition the village for sustainable growth, the following recommendations have been identified. These initiatives aim to improve visibility, build influence, strengthen community unity, and establish a strong foundation for development.

1. Create an Official Facebook Page for Wider Visibility
In today’s digital age, visibility begins online. A well-managed Facebook page will serve as the village’s public communication hub, enabling:

Connection between sons and daughters of the village, both at home and abroad

Dissemination of key announcements, updates, and events

Promotion of community activities, success stories, and development campaigns

Engagement with the wider public, NGOs, donors, and potential partners

Social media is one of the fastest ways to raise awareness. When properly managed, the page can become a powerful tool for mobilization and community-building.

2. Regularly Update the Page With Photos, Videos, and Communiqués
Consistency builds credibility. The committee must ensure that the Facebook page remains active and informative. This includes:

Posting photos of development activities

Sharing videos of events, meetings, and achievements

Publishing important communiqués to keep citizens informed

Highlighting youth empowerment activities, cultural events, and community projects

Posting alerts about emergencies or community concerns

An active page shows that the village is alive, organized, and engaged.

3. Create a Credible, Professional Website Accessible Worldwide
While a Facebook page helps with social visibility, a website provides formal, global recognition. This website should function as the official digital archive and information center for New Town Barombi. It should include:

PROBLEM FACED Despite producing well-mannered citizens and contributing significantly to the socioeconomic fabric of Cameroon, New Town Barombi remains administratively invisible.
